Chapter 2 shifts the analysis to the circumstances in Lebanon’s socioeconomic cultural history that heighten and mobilize the radical consciousness of communal identities. Rather than assigning blame exclusively either on the internal disparities or on the unresolved regional rivalries or divisive foreign incursions, the study will argue for and substantiate the mutually reinforcing character of the inside-outside dynamics. An attempt is also made to provide a more balanced and realistic view of the inside-outside dialectics.
